about

The AXOLOTL project was born during probably the most difficult period of our generation: the world pandemic. Although coming from Calabria, a land that makes it hard to achieve jazz music projects, Francesco Alampi, Paolo Ielo, Jessica Grande and Emanuele Fuduli have strongly believed in the accomplishment of this work.
From the very beginning, the intent was to express a strong sense of musical freedom and the necessity to define it by mixing different musical influences in a harmonic and solid way. The tracks represent this goal: the merger between instinct and rationality.
The choice of the album title was not casual. Axolotl is an animal species at risk of extinction, due to various factors such as pollution and the loss of its habitat. The primary capacity of this species is to renew and regenerate. That is why the group immediately accepted “The Axolotl project” as a symbol of musical identification, particularly in reference to jazz music, that always tends to renew and adapt itself to the different musical eras.
The lineup includes Francesco Alampi (guitar/composer), Paolo Ielo (double bass/composer), Jessica Grande (voice/Composer), Emanuele Fuduli (drums), Andrea Militano (piano/Rhodes), and Matteo Scarcella (saxophone / transverse flute).
The 37 minutes of the album bring you through the different stories of these musicians. Francesco Alampi proposes tracks written in odd meters, like “Axolotl”, “Strange Reflection”, “In Walking Mind”, songs with a modern taste without giving up a traditional jazz sound. Following are ballads written by the bassist, Paolo Ielo. “When they Smile” and “Waiting for the sun” are full of intimacy and musical romanticism. In addition, last but not least, “Lighthouse”, a refined and dreamy modal composition, written and sang by the profound voice of Jessica Grande.
The characteristic, elegant and dynamic language of the drummer Emanuele Fuduli, which takes actively part at the track arrangements, supports the whole album.
Participants as performers are also the pianist Andrea Militano and the saxophonist Matteo Scarcella.
